Jousting at the Game of Thrones Festival in Kent

What a fantastic time had by The Cavalry of Heroes team at Thronefest!  Game of Thrones fans put together an excellent event to celebrate all things related to the George R Martin books and to the film series.  Filled with actors from the TV series as well as appearances from the animal stars; the wolves and the ravens.

We were asked to attend to put on a Game of Thrones inspired Jousting Tournament, with our Knights on horseback and what fun we had!  As some of our riders have been fortunate enough to ride as part of the TV series under The Devils Horsemen, we made the most of who they looked like, so let me introduce to you: King of the North (after coming back from holiday in Barbados), Marjory Tyrell, Big Finger and the Golden Lannister! The Cavalry of Heroes Thronefest Game of Thrones Medieval Jousting Jon Snow

On the first show of the day we had an audience that was 6 people deep around the arena with those at the front having to sit down to allow for those at the back to see. Most of the lovely crowd were cheering for the King of the North, representing house Stark (“what are we doing here… we should all be riding north…. We need to head north to fight the white walkers” – in your best Yorkshire accent!).  The atmosphere was buzzing, and the riders and horses loved it!

Not only were we jousting we were asked to provide some terrifying White Walkers on horses, including the Night King himself. Special mention has to go to our two White Walker riders who did an absolutely superb job terrifying the visitors as they came through the gates.  You might recognise the two horses as Asgard and Zorro, our beautiful black Friesians.

Our other horses at the show included our beautiful Andalusian Stallion Curioso Maximus, our Irish Cob X Guinness and our appaloosa brothers Harry and Apollo.

For its first year, this celebration of all things Game of Thrones, was brilliant and can only get better in the future.  Well done to the event organisers and volunteers who you could tell just loved being able to be a part of such a great day.  A special thank you to the mother and daughter team who were looking after our horse area and escorting us to and from the arena – thank you.

With a long drive back home ahead of us from Kent, The Cavalry of Heroes team set off back home to the Welsh Border, with only a little regret that it hadn’t been a two day festival as being near the seaside in Kent was rather lovely.

Herefordshire Country Fair - WW1 Horses and Heroes - The Final Cavalry Charge

Horse Display in the Heart of Historic Hereford at the Hereford Country Fair

Marc and I love Hereford!  It was one of the places Marc lived when he was growing up and since we moved here 5 years ago, when I’ve had time, I’ve loved exploring the Independent Quarter and marvelling in the delights that the new ‘Old Market Hereford’ has bought to Herefordshire.  So we were delighted that we got the chance to perform at the annual Hereford Country Fair last weekend.

And what a fair it was! I remember looking up to see RAF parachuters flying in over the top of our heads and the horses with flares streaming behind them as they landed right on cue in the centre of the main arena.

We were there to celebrate and remember the role horses played during The Great War 1914-1918, both at home and on the front line.  This was the last major war in the western world which saw horses still play a major part in the outcome – not as you may think charging in to battle, but instead providing essential transportation of goods, guns and essential supplies.

Here at The Cavalry of Heroes, we perform with a magical blend of horsemanship and theatre, and it could not have been more true last weekend.  Taking the wonderful Hereford show audience on a tour-de-force of emotions as they experienced the journey of three young lads as they joined the war.

We also learned a lot about the workers and the working conditions in the munitions factories during World War One and World War Two and how when the one in Rotherwas was bombed not many survived and the names of those who died have not been released.  BBC Hereford and Worcester are campaigning to have the names of these workers released so that they may be commemorated.  Some of the survivors were recognised at the Fair this year in a poignant ceremony.

The tricks on the horses were great fun and more adventurous than ever with a daring display from our local farmer showing the lads how it’s done and even managing to doff his cap to the VIP tent as he raced past.

This Historic Show was full of remembrance and gratitude and we were proud to be a part of it.  Thank you to all the organisers who do so much work behind the scenes to bring these events to us and to everyone who came and saw us and met the horses (And yes, Curioso did have a bath as soon as he got home after a celebratory roll at the end of the last performance when he was back in his paddock!).
