St George rode his wonderful horse Guinness in the first performance with his Knights riding Apollo, Harry, Guinness and Curioso as their noble steeds, who we all such good boys.  Harry and Apollo are our Appaloosa brothers, while Guinness is an Irish Cob X and Curioso Maximus De Cartujano is our sweetest Andalusian Stallion.

A special thanks goes to the Lady Elizabeth from Past Times Living History who kept the long line waiting to meet the Knights after the performance entertained.  We had so many lovely comments about how informative and entertaining Lady Elizabeth was that you can be sure she will be back!

What a weekend at The Royal Cornwall Show!

It was an honour to be chosen to pay tribute to the horses and soldiers of WW1 at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show.   As it’s the centenary year of the end of The Great War, and with many of our riders having family who served during the war, we wanted to pay tribute to these horses, men and women in a main arena act unique to this year.

We love performing to such large audiences as the atmosphere was incredible and our riders and horses all thoroughly enjoyed performing for everyone.  With such a great team and camaraderie we even added extra sections to the show and tailored our performances so that our General and his soldiers could perform a special salute to the Royal Box and even exit on a flying high!

With our displays being both epic and emotional we thank the lovely members of the public who came to meet us afterwards to tell us their stories of their past generations who fought in the war.  One lady still had the stirrups from the saddle that her Grandfather used at the front, while another told us about her great-grandfather who served in the artillery.

We learnt also about the women who contributed to the war efforts from the lovely ladies at The SideSaddle Association who explained about the role of women as first aiders and messengers during the war.  Did you also know that women would have trained the horses at home so that they were ready to be sent to the front, as most of the men were already on the front line.

Standing in the middle of the arena with our horses and riders thundering past with swords drawn for the final cavalry charge, our last performance was particularly emotional as the minute silence was broken by a large cheer and round of applause from the audience and all the horses and riders were presented with rosettes from the president of the association.

It’s been a long-standing dream of Marc Lovatt and our Cavalry team to honour those that fought in the first world war and we were so pleased to be able to present this at the prestigious Royal Cornwall Show.

Our horses were all excellent boys across the weekend and really enjoyed themselves, having fun in the arena.  We had all eight horses with us which is a pleasure as they all get on with each other and we love having them with us.  They made lots of new friends with the showjumpers, heavy horses and miniatures that were all stabled nearby, and lots of new human friends with Guinness stealing a lot of hearts, and Asgard, D’artagnan and Zorro flying the flag for the beautiful Friesian breed.

There was a fun backstage competition running this weekend as well which involved a grand prize of the first round of drinks being bought if the riders could all hit their targets at a very difficult charge during tent pegging!  Incredibly they came so close on each occasion and we all thought that it was a sure thing in the last show but the target fell off last second!  The prize therefore still up for grabs by our riders for our next WW1: Horses and Heroes show, which will be in Brockwell Park, London, for the Lambeth Country Show.

You may also have heard our Riders being interviewed for BBC Radio Cornwall by Julie Skentelbery, presenter of the Breakfast Show on the Friday morning! Our riders were fully dressed in their uniforms and answering questions about what it must have been like to be a soldier during WW1.

Thank you to the organisers, stewards and volunteers of The Royal Cornwall Show, who’s organisation and friendliness made our visit very special and we would particularly like to thank the Show Secretary Mr Chris Riddle, Main Arena Stewards including Roger and the team in the commentary box for their wonderful introductions and publicity of our performances across the weekend.

Having a relatively quiet week now as the horses get some well-deserved rest in their fields, enjoying the sunshine, before we make our way to Sudeley Castle for some Medieval Jousting in honour of Father’s Day on Sunday 17th June 2018.

Jousting at the Game of Thrones Festival in Kent

What a fantastic time had by The Cavalry of Heroes team at Thronefest!  Game of Thrones fans put together an excellent event to celebrate all things related to the George R Martin books and to the film series.  Filled with actors from the TV series as well as appearances from the animal stars; the wolves and the ravens.

The Cavalry of Heroes Thronefest Game of Thrones Medieval Jousting Lannister vs Stark

We were asked to attend to put on a Game of Thrones inspired Jousting Tournament, with our Knights on horseback and what fun we had!  As some of our riders have been fortunate enough to ride as part of the TV series under The Devils Horsemen, we made the most of who they looked like, so let me introduce to you: King of the North (after coming back from holiday in Barbados), Marjory Tyrell, Big Finger and the Golden Lannister! The Cavalry of Heroes Thronefest Game of Thrones Medieval Jousting Jon Snow

On the first show of the day we had an audience that was 6 people deep around the arena with those at the front having to sit down to allow for those at the back to see. Most of the lovely crowd were cheering for the King of the North, representing house Stark (“what are we doing here… we should all be riding north…. We need to head north to fight the white walkers” – in your best Yorkshire accent!).  The atmosphere was buzzing, and the riders and horses loved it!

Not only were we jousting we were asked to provide some terrifying White Walkers on horses, including the Night King himself. Special mention has to go to our two White Walker riders who did an absolutely superb job terrifying the visitors as they came through the gates.  You might recognise the two horses as Asgard and Zorro, our beautiful black Friesians.

Our other horses at the show included our beautiful Andalusian Stallion Curioso Maximus, our Irish Cob X Guinness and our appaloosa brothers Harry and Apollo.

For its first year, this celebration of all things Game of Thrones, was brilliant and can only get better in the future.  Well done to the event organisers and volunteers who you could tell just loved being able to be a part of such a great day.  A special thank you to the mother and daughter team who were looking after our horse area and escorting us to and from the arena – thank you.

With a long drive back home ahead of us from Kent, The Cavalry of Heroes team set off back home to the Welsh Border, with only a little regret that it hadn’t been a two day festival as being near the seaside in Kent was rather lovely.

The Snow must go on… performing at Delapre Abbey

What a magical start to our show season with the 900 years of history opening at Delapre Abbey and getting to perform our Medieval Jousting Knights on Horseback Show in the snow!

It was a travelling through time extravaganza and The Cavalry of Heroes team were there in all our finery to perform one of our Medieval Jousting Displays. Featuring our Prince Harry (or as the lovely lady in the audience shouted Prince Phillip!), Lady Lancelot and our infamous Dark Knight Lord Pendragon.

And magically it snowed! We actually got to perform our Jousting show in the snow to a wonderful audience who braved the elements outside as well as a lot more who stayed indoors and cheered from the big windows of the grand house (Marc and I later learnt that there were really warm radiators by each window which the team made use of towards the end of the day when temperatures dropped close to zero).

Our beautiful Andalusian horse Curioso Maximus blended in well with the snow being as shiny white as ever and Guinness enjoyed taking a turn as The Dark Knight’s trusted steed performing his horse stunts and tricks to perfection.

The horses were pampered with heating, nice bigs rugs and lots of hay to eat. Overall a great start to the season and we are now all definitely looking forward to some summer sunshine!

It was a pleasure to get to walk around the renovations at the Abbey which have taken the last five years to complete and meet some wonderful craftsmen including Georgians and a Victorian Magic Lantern expert – moving pictures before cameras, amazing.

Thanks to Delapre Abbey for hosting such a marvellous event and to everyone who braved the weather to come and watch our Knights battle it out on the Jousting field.
