WW1, Heavy Horses and the Sea at Melplash Show 2018

What a wonderful country show on the Dorset Coast!  Surrounded by spectacular beaches and grouped together with the most gorgeous Heavy Horses, we were pleased to have been asked to honour the horses of WW1 with our 100 year tribute show.

We have learnt so much this year about the horses of WW1 from our own research but also from the stories told to us by show visitors, and Melplash was no exception.  With one particular story from a lovely lady who is 96 years old about her brave father who fought in the first world war, who had to leave his artillery horse behind, which left me in tears.  We also heard about a local horse who was incredibly lucky to have returned home from the War and how a local lady’s broodmare is now pregnant with that horse’s great great grand-foal.

What we love so much about shows (as well as performing!) is talking to people between our performances and hearing their stories as well as talking to them about our beautiful horses.  I am very grateful to have 8 such lovely horses who we, as a team here at The Cavalry of Heroes, get to work with everyday.

At Melplash Show, we had six of our boys with us (Guinness, D’artagnon, Zorro, Curioso, Harry and Apollo) all enjoying the fresh sea air!  They performed beautifully and we couldn’t have been prouder of them and all the hard work that Marc has done in training them to form this very special relationship.

We’d like to say a special thank you to the organisers of the show (especially Lucy who was there to greet us with a smile when we arrived and couldn’t have been more helpful) and the stewards in the horse area in their stylish white coats making sure everything went smoothly and seeing us safely to and from the main arena.

Also a special thank you to Mark Margetts for his excellent photography.

If you want to follow the adventures of The Cavalry of Heroes and not miss out on a single dramatic moment then head over to our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages and give us a like and a follow for behind the scenes footage, training and in-team jests!

Surprise cutting of the ribbon!

Sir Hugh Calvary and King Richard II were in attendance today opening an outstanding new playground near Beeston Castle.

Charging in on his noble steed Sir Hugh galloped to meet King Richard at the entrance.  With much cheering and encouragement from the crowd, Sir Hugh cut through the ribbon with only one strike of his sword!

Once the playground was open, King Richard II buried a time capsule with the help of local children.  This was in memory of the local legend that King Richard II burried his treasure at Beeston Castle only to be arrested and never to return.  The treasure was never found and is still missing. Hopefully the same won’t happen to the time capsule.  Thanks to The Journey Man (pictured above) for all the fantastic storytelling.

The children then had the opportunity to meet the knights and learn some Knight skills in our energetic knight school, learning to pose heroically, defend their fellow Knights and joust against real Knights before trying on some armour.

All in all a fantastic day.  Our dashing King Richard II was played by Wolfie Hughes and Sir Hugh Calvary by Marc Lovatt riding Guinness.

French Knight on Asgard

What an amazing weekend; wonderfully organised and superbly entertaining!  The entire team had so much fun celebrating the 600 year anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt and the horses marvelled in all the attention!

There were horse and carriage rides around town in the morning alongside medieval tours by Hay History Group, a fantastic turn out by The Freemen of Gwent, as well as calligraphy and workshops to decorate swords and shields.

In the afternoon our Knights turned up to sword fight in and around the castle, followed by performances from the Morris Dancers and The Village Quire.  Culminating in a superb performance by the Hay Theatre Company of Shakespeare’s Henry V with the audience processing through town as either the English or the French ready to fight their final battle in front of the castle.

We met many a princess and brave knight willing to fight on the day and all of this in the fantastic grounds of Hay Castle.

In the evening Professor Anne Curry gave an illustrated talk on the Battle of Agincourt to an engaged audience.

At the end of it all Guinness, Asgard, Harry and Apollo all took a well-deserved roll in the fields before dinner and a good night’s sleep.
