Training Film horses
with The Everyday Horseman Marc lovatt
Marc Lovatt is a rare type of horse trainer who is able to produce horses who are safe, calm and comfortable on set and we are so happy to have him here at The Cavalry of Heroes. Working within our mission to improve the lives of performing horses across the UK, Marc keeps a collection of specially trained horses for The Cavalry of Heroes and works with them until they are happy and comfortable on set, trusting in their handlers to keep everyone safe despite the cacophony of strange sights and sounds that would baffle and frighten most horses.
By Marc taking his time to comprehensively train our horses with a well rounded ride and drive education before they go anywhere near a set means that they importantly enjoy their work rather than being stressed and in turn they don’t waste valuable production time. He knows each horse individually and works with them on a one-on-one basis so that they learn trust, which combined with their brave temperament and Marc’s compassionate training, produces a predictable and safe experience on set. The results are long lasting with horses who are happy, and look forward to appearing in front of camera.
You can find out more about how Marc trains his horses in riding, driving, and also in specialist skills with weapons, melee work, charges, smoke, gunshots, fire, rearing, bowing, lying down and the all important patience, on his vlog and you can receive the latest videos to your email by signing up to our adventure newsletter below. Teaching Actors Riding and Driving
Riding a horse or driving a cart as an actor on set is very different to everyday riding, which much more to consider and many more distractions for the horses, just being around horses on set may feel a little more daunting that usual. Don’t worry, that’s where a little bit of prep before hand, either in person or online, can really help. Marc offers horse riding and carriage driving lessons specifically for actors – see here for more details.
