Jousting at the Game of Thrones Festival in Kent

What a fantastic time had by The Cavalry of Heroes team at Thronefest!  Game of Thrones fans put together an excellent event to celebrate all things related to the George R Martin books and to the film series.  Filled with actors from the TV series as well as appearances from the animal stars; the wolves and the ravens.

We were asked to attend to put on a Game of Thrones inspired Jousting Tournament, with our Knights on horseback and what fun we had!  As some of our riders have been fortunate enough to ride as part of the TV series under The Devils Horsemen, we made the most of who they looked like, so let me introduce to you: King of the North (after coming back from holiday in Barbados), Marjory Tyrell, Big Finger and the Golden Lannister! The Cavalry of Heroes Thronefest Game of Thrones Medieval Jousting Jon Snow

On the first show of the day we had an audience that was 6 people deep around the arena with those at the front having to sit down to allow for those at the back to see. Most of the lovely crowd were cheering for the King of the North, representing house Stark (“what are we doing here… we should all be riding north…. We need to head north to fight the white walkers” – in your best Yorkshire accent!).  The atmosphere was buzzing, and the riders and horses loved it!

Not only were we jousting we were asked to provide some terrifying White Walkers on horses, including the Night King himself. Special mention has to go to our two White Walker riders who did an absolutely superb job terrifying the visitors as they came through the gates.  You might recognise the two horses as Asgard and Zorro, our beautiful black Friesians.

Our other horses at the show included our beautiful Andalusian Stallion Curioso Maximus, our Irish Cob X Guinness and our appaloosa brothers Harry and Apollo.

For its first year, this celebration of all things Game of Thrones, was brilliant and can only get better in the future.  Well done to the event organisers and volunteers who you could tell just loved being able to be a part of such a great day.  A special thank you to the mother and daughter team who were looking after our horse area and escorting us to and from the arena – thank you.

With a long drive back home ahead of us from Kent, The Cavalry of Heroes team set off back home to the Welsh Border, with only a little regret that it hadn’t been a two day festival as being near the seaside in Kent was rather lovely.

Breaking visitor and temperature records at Berkeley Castle May Jousting Show

What a weekend! Amazing crowds and the most beautiful weather at Berkeley Castle. We were joined by Past Times Living History Group to put on a medieval extravaganza fun day for the whole family.

Not only did we have four Knights fighting it out to be crowned tournament champion, Henry VIII and all his six wives were also in attendance. To quote one particularly enthralled visitor “I’ve learnt more about Henry VIII and his wives in 30 minutes than I did when I was at school, just brilliant”

Overall all I’m pleased to say that we broke yet another venue’s all time visitor record, with record numbers of people through the doors to Berkeley Castle. Thank you everyone for coming to support our show and the Castle with the superb work they are doing to keep it looking stunning and creating a wonderful venue for a fun family day out.

Marc and I were also joined by our newest team member Francesca Kay, who became our commentating Queen for the Bank Holiday Monday. Lady Francesca excelled at creating a fun family atmosphere for all visitors and is a very talented wordsmith and performer and we’re very pleased to have her as part of the team.

Our beautiful horses with us were Guinness and Curioso Maximus. We made the decision to keep them out of their bigger costumes for some of the shows as it was really too hot to ask them to run around in the equivalent of a winter coat, but, I hope you agree that they still looked beautiful with their shiny coats and natural good looks. They were pampered all weekend with cold showers and lots of care and attention from our lovely grooms and squires Judy and Charlie.

No such respite for the Knights though in their chainmail and armour, but I’m please to say that the ice cream from The Yurt Cafe went down a treat.

On to our next show at this coming weekend at the South Suffolk Show with a change of scene and our first performance this year of our World War One Signature show. Remember that you can only see this show this year as it is the centenary year of the end of The Great War, so check out our show dates to find our performance closest to you!

The Snow must go on… performing at Delapre Abbey

What a magical start to our show season with the 900 years of history opening at Delapre Abbey and getting to perform our Medieval Jousting Knights on Horseback Show in the snow!

It was a travelling through time extravaganza and The Cavalry of Heroes team were there in all our finery to perform one of our Medieval Jousting Displays. Featuring our Prince Harry (or as the lovely lady in the audience shouted Prince Phillip!), Lady Lancelot and our infamous Dark Knight Lord Pendragon.

And magically it snowed! We actually got to perform our Jousting show in the snow to a wonderful audience who braved the elements outside as well as a lot more who stayed indoors and cheered from the big windows of the grand house (Marc and I later learnt that there were really warm radiators by each window which the team made use of towards the end of the day when temperatures dropped close to zero).

Our beautiful Andalusian horse Curioso Maximus blended in well with the snow being as shiny white as ever and Guinness enjoyed taking a turn as The Dark Knight’s trusted steed performing his horse stunts and tricks to perfection.

The horses were pampered with heating, nice bigs rugs and lots of hay to eat. Overall a great start to the season and we are now all definitely looking forward to some summer sunshine!

It was a pleasure to get to walk around the renovations at the Abbey which have taken the last five years to complete and meet some wonderful craftsmen including Georgians and a Victorian Magic Lantern expert – moving pictures before cameras, amazing.

Thanks to Delapre Abbey for hosting such a marvellous event and to everyone who braved the weather to come and watch our Knights battle it out on the Jousting field.

Lambeth Country Show - Brockwell Park - Medieval Jousting Tournament with The Cavalry of Heroes, Knights on Horseback Main Arena Stunt Horse Show 2017 - The Knights joke under the London skyline

Medieval Jousting under the London Skyline at Lambeth Country Show

She strong, she’s fit, she’ll see you in the lists! Lancelot, Lancelot!  Lambeth Country Show last weekend saw the first appearance of our Lady Lancelot as she joined five other Knights in shining armour on Horseback as they competed in the joust to see who will become tournament champion.

Lambeth Country Show - Brockwell Park - Medieval Jousting Tournament with The Cavalry of Heroes, Knights on Horseback Main Arena Stunt Horse Show 2017 - Lady Lancelot

A show close to both my heart and our Golden Knight, Sir William’s (Marc Lovatt) heart, as it is on the doorstep of where we first met.  Marc was living in Brixton running Triathlons and working with horses and I was working in the city and living in Northcote Road.  The London Skyline from the top of Brockwell park is just stunning and will always remind us where we met.  What has made returning even better is being surround by our beautiful horses!

As always, thank you London, for being an amazing crowd, including the lovely lady who insisted that our Lord Baldric ‘Get his kit off’ to which he almost obliged.  Everyone cheered as the Knights performed with a buzz of excitement and greeted their fans as everyone was asked to choose their favourite Knight and with so many to choose from it wasn’t an easy task.

Our Knights included Lady Lancelot, who had stolen her father’s armour to complete.  Our Golden Knight, Sir William fighting for truth, compassion and tolerance.  Sir Baldric on the fasted horse in the arena Apollo, the first of the Dark Knight’s evil Henchmen.  And not to forget The King, The Dark Knight and Sir Agravaine.

The horses drew the biggest crowd though and were beautifully behaved, even our Stallions, when they were distracted by the police horses performing but also when the mounted police were patrolling the park.  Couldn’t have been more proud of the boys; Asgard, Zorro, Harry, Apollo, Curioso and Guinness.

First Stop on the European Tour – Medieval Jousting Stunt Show at Flavours of Fingal Show, Ireland

It sounds like the start of a really good joke… what do you get when Four Knights, Three Squires, Four Horses and One Princess travel to Ireland?

The Answer:  An absolutely brilliant Medieval Jousting Horse Stunt Show at a remarkable event – The Flavour of Fingal, Country Show, Ireland.

With wonderful hospitality from this great show,  a very enthusiastic audience and the sun shining the whole weekend, a marvellous time was had by all who came with us and saw us at this fantastic show.

Sir Lancelot made his first appearance with The Cavalry of Heroes and smashed it, riding Curioso Maximus, our white Andalusian Stallion.  He got two good strikes in against Sir Agravaine, but in a twist of fate received two knockout blows from our Dark Knight Lord Pendragon.  It looked like all was lost for our Golden Knight and Sir Lancelot until a sword fight ensued with a hilarious outcome.

Lots of trick riding and horse stunts including Roman Riding and falls were seen in this full on show.  The Knights even having a tete-a-tete with some Vikings.  All in all a really memorable weekend. And of course, the real stars of our show, our horses, Guinness (how could we not take the sweetest Irish Cob on a visit back to Ireland), Curioso Maximus, Harry and Apollo.  They were such wonderful boys for the whole trip, performing like the true stars they are.Our biggest thank you to our amazing team who made the whole show such a success and which still brings smiles to all those who attended.  A big thank you as well to the show organisers who put on such a splendid free event – long may it continue!

Please enjoy some of the lovely images taken by the very talented Lisa Lucas, our official photographer, and if you have any images of your own from this great show then please share them with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter by tagging @cavalryofheroes as we’d love to see them, and our Knights love responding to fan mail.

Take care all and we’ll see you really soon at our next show in four days time.
